Chen Ziyu, a young Chinese painter, seeks inspiration from traditional Chinese art and, in his own style, creates new interpretations and expresses his understanding of the world through painted images. Chen Ziyu is obsessed with the form of symmetry because he believes that this sense of form has been pursued by the Chinese since ancient times. Symmetry is an element that can be found in many national treasures of Chinese culture: architecture, patterns, porcelain, seals, paper cuttings, calligraphy, etc. All of them emphasize on symmetry, which may also reflect the unique Chinese concept of balance between yin and yang. Moreover, symmetrical things can give people a sense of “quiet” and seriousness, which implies the beauty of balance and stability. This kind of form can well express Chen Ziyu's aesthetic concept, so he wanted to try to utilize this sense of form to the extreme.
In “Please Close Your Eyes When It's Dark”, Chen Ziyu tried a few looks combining insect elements and human figures, resulting in this set of “Deities Bound in Cocoons - [Black Witch Cicada]”.
Witch Cicada” harmonizes with ‘impermanence’, and Chen Ziyu usually loves to play with harmonies. This time, he tries to use the element of cicadas to re-express the “black and white impermanence” with the core of oriental tradition. It means “life is impermanent, black and white is the opposite, so black and white is impermanent”. It was a great challenge for Mamoru's prototypist, Motoki, to make the beautiful and delicate figures three-dimensional. Although he was familiar with making human figures, he was completely unfamiliar with the structure of the cicada, which is an ingenious combination of human and cicada.
The structure of the [White Witch Cicada] is permeated by several layers from the inside to the outside and crosses over each other, and Genki had to sculpt all of these effects in three dimensions with great difficulty. People often use the idiom “as thin as a cicada's wing” to describe the exquisite craftsmanship of clothing, and the cicada's wing is translucent and has a complex texture, so does the cicada's coat of the [White Witch Cicada]. Thinness and thickness should be well controlled, too thin to turn the mold, and thick if the transparency is not enough. So Yuanmu in this part of the repeated testing several times, cicada clothing wing vein direction using the filigree process to complete, and made two versions, one is faithful to Chen Ziyu's original, the other is imitation biological texture, finally the end of the crowd still think the latter looks good.

When the prototype of the White Witch Cicada was completed, it was presented in a purely upright form. In order to enrich the display form, Mamoru conceived the idea of whether it could be displayed in a box, or whether the human form could be placed in a cicada cocoon. In the end, Mena Shiki found a piece of wood and misplaced the back of the [White Witch Cicada].
